Roman, Gillis (d. ca. 1610)
Gillis Ro(o)man, (died ca. 1610), a printer of Haarlem, Holland, who printed a number of Mennonite books, particularly letters and confessions of the martyrs. Probably as early as 1577 he printed (and published?) Sommige Belydingen ... by Reytse Aysesz. In 1579-1588 he printed Martelaersbrieven, a collection of letters written by martyrs, which included letters by Hendrick Alewijnsz, Jacob de Keersmaecker (de Rore), Joost Verkindert, Thijs Joriaensz, and Jan Woutersz van Cuyck. In 1588 he published Tgetuygenisse ende de naeghelaeten Schriften van Christiaen Rijcen (Christiaen de Rijcke). Some of this material was printed in the Dutch martyr books, including van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror. Gillis Rooman was probably also the printer of the "Schottland Bible" for Krijn Vermeulen at Danzig in 1598.
It is not known whether or not Gillis Rooman was a Mennonite. His son and successor Adriaen Rooman obviously was not, for in 1617 he printed the second edition of the Dutch translation of Heinrich Bullinger's book, supplemented by Gerardus Nicolai, Teghens de Wederdoopers, which violently attacks the Mennonites.
