Gelder, van, family
Van Gelder is a Dutch Mennonite family, whose ancestor was Dirk van Gelder (b. 1685 at Kampen, Dutch province of Overijssel, and d. there 1762). He was a member of the Reformed Church, but his wife, Machteld Bruins, is supposed to have been a member of the Mennonite congregation. Their son Arend van Gelder (b. 1709 at Kampen and d. 1772 at Zaandam) was baptized in his childhood in the Reformed Church at Kampen. As an adult he moved first to Amsterdam and later to Zaandam, where he operated a grocery store. In Amsterdam he was married to Alida Nieuwenhuizen, who was a Mennonite, and van Gelder himself also joined the Mennonite Church, receiving baptism upon his confession of faith in the Zon meetinghouse at Amsterdam in 1734. Hendrik van Gelder was born of this marriage.
The Mennonite minister Arend Hendrik van Gelder was born of the third marriage of Arend van Gelder with Susanna Oortman. Pieter Smidt van Gelder, a son of Pastor Hendrik van Gelder and Maria Smidt (b. 1762 at Ouddorp, d. 1827 at Zaandam), settled at Wormerveer in the industrial Zaan district north of Amsterdam and ran a paper mill, which was continued in the world-renowned Royal Dutch Paper Manufactories van Gelder Zonen, a big business which was still carried on in the mid-20th century by members of the van Gelder family. This Pieter Smidt van Gelder, who became a wealthy man, was also sheriff and assistant-burgomaster of Wormerveer. Hendrik Arend van Gelder, a Mennonite minister, was his grandson. The van Gelder family at Wormerveer has become allied by marriage with other Mennonite families of this district, such as Boekenoogen, Cardinaal, and Kaars Sypesteyn.
It is not clear whether Pieter van Gelder and Jan van Gelder, who were deacons of the Mennonite congregation at Utrecht about 1651-1679 belonged to the same family.
