Jan de Oude Kleerkoper, an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake at Antwerp, Belgium, on 21 or 22 October 1551 (van Braght, Martyrs' Mirror, erroneously reports 2 October), together with Peter Bruynen, Pleunis van Hoevele, Martin du Petitz, and Jacob Peeters. About their imprisonment we are informed by two letters of Pieter Bruynen, found in the Offer des Heeren. Their names are celebrated in a hymn, "Tot lof des Vaders, soons, heyligen geest" (To the glory of Father, Son and Holy Ghost), found in the Offer and included in the Ausbund. The confession of Jan de Oude Kleerkoper is found in the Offer and following martyrbooks, including the Martyrs' Mirror. From the records published by P. Génard in Antwerpsch Archievenblad it appears that his official name was Jan van der Wouwen (Wouweren), born at Westerloo, Flanders; he was charged with the crime of rebaptism and persisting in his "heresy."
