"Good Morning. Welcome to Mostly Mennonite, Mostly A Cappella a program of hymns and anthems for a Sunday morning. My name is John Horst and I’m happy to be your host for this 90 minute program featuring choral and small vocal ensembles."
Mostly Mennonite, Mostly A Cappella (MMMAC), broadcast on radio station WEMC 91.7 FM In Harrisonburg, Virginia, first aired in spring 2002. As of 2010 it continued and was broadcast on Sunday mornings from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. It also streamed online at WEMC's website.
Host John Horst featured Mennonite a cappella music on the program, but also played musical selections outside of this tradition on most programs. The emphasis was on hymns and anthems for a Sunday morning, rather than on extended choral works. Local choral groups were particularly featured, including those from Eastern Mennonite University and Eastern Mennonite High School, the Mennonite Hour compact disc reissues, and the Shenandoah Valley Children’s Choir, to name a few. The excellent West Coast Mennonite Chamber Choir from British Columbia often appeared.
The host did not produce the program live. Each program was recorded and burned on two CD’s. The recording engineer in 2010 was Matt Bingay, program director for WEMC / WMRA. The cycle of available programs in 2010 was large enough so that no program was repeated throughout the year. Programs were added and edited as time permitted. In 2009 ARBITRON surveys estimated 1600 local listeners on a Sunday morning.
