Bartel (Bartholomeus) Louwer (Lauren, Louren, Louwers) was born at Goch, Germany, about 1580, d. at Amsterdam after 1670. In his youth Bartel traveled through many countries and lived in 1617 for some time at Vilna, Lithuania. From 1642 he was preacher (later elder) of the Flemish congregation of Amsterdam until about 1660. Bartel Louwer published Kort Verhael, eens Gesprecks, voorghevallen in der Wildae oft Vylnae (Amsterdam, no date; 2nd edition, no place, 1655; 3rd edition, Amsterdam, 1664). An extract of this booklet and some biographical notes on Louwer are found in Maatschoen's Aanhangzel. Louwer, who was a champion of strict Mennonite principles, was a representative of the Amsterdam congregation in the Flemish conferences at Haarlem in June 1649 and Leiden in June 1660. He was a friend of T. J. van Braght, to whom he gave a letter from Zurich, Switzerland (Martyrs Mirror), containing particulars about the martyr Hans Landis.
