Au (Au im Bregenzerwald), a village in Vorarlberg, Austria, on the Ach, was the center of the Anabaptists in the Bregenz Forest (Mountains) from 1580 to 1585. The severely repressive measures of the government caused many Anabaptists of Au to migrate to Moravia. The migration was headed by the apothecary Melchior Platzer, the most important figure in the Anabaptist movement in Vorarlberg. He became a schoolmaster of the Hutterian Brethren, and died as a martyr in 1583 at Feldkirchen in Vorarlberg. Count Hannibal of Hohenembs, the top-ranking official of the four domains of Vorarlberg, a nephew of the pope and brother-in-law of St. Karl Borromäus, had unsuccessfully sought to have Platzer burned at the stake; Platzer was beheaded and then burned.
