Calleken (Catherine) Meere, an Anabaptist martyr, born at Wyncle, Flanders, daughter of Pieter, unmarried, was burned at the stake on the Vrijdagsmarkt at Ghent, Belgium, 28 July 1573, at 11 A.M., together with Jacob van den Weghe, Francois (Fransoys) van Leuvene, and Hendrick Bauwens. These martyrs could not speak to the people because of a gag put in their mouths. The people present at their execution, being in sympathy with the martyrs, vainly tried to prevent the execution.
