Jan Pennewaerts, from Leuven, Belgium (or Loenen, Dutch province of Utrecht), an Anabaptist martyr, burned at the stake at Amsterdam on 30 March 1549, together with five brethren and two sisters. The names of these martyrs are celebrated in the hymn "Tis nu schier al vervult ons broeders getal" (the number of our brethren now is nearly complete), found in Veelderhande Liedekens of 1566 and later Dutch hymnbooks. Jan had been baptized by Gillis van Aken.
