De Haan (Haen) is a Dutch Flemish Mennonite family, originally living at Sweveghem, near Kortrijk (Courtrai) in Flanders. Pieter de Haan emigrated because of his faith to Haarlem, Holland, where he died in 1617, and where his descendants lived, most of whom were merchants, and many of whom were deacons of the church. Collateral branches were found in Amsterdam and Leiden. Here David Bierens de Haan (1822-1895) (a son of Pieter de Haan, 1757-1833, banker and cloth manufacturer at Leiden, and Wijna Bierens of the Amsterdam Bierens family), who was a professor of mathematics and physics at the University of Leiden, was a deacon of the Mennonite congregation 1866-1895. Anthony de Haan Pz, who was a deacon of the Amsterdam congregation 1835-1839 and 1846-1848, was one of the founders of the Dutch Mennonite Mission Association. It could not be determined whether there is relationship between this family and the well-known Dutch Mennonite leader Galenus Abrahamsz de Haan (1622-1706).
