Jan Jansz Deutel was a bookseller and rhetorician in Hoorn, Holland, where he died ca. 1652. De Hoop Scheffer counts him among the Mennonites and has placed his writings under Mennonite authors in the catalog of the [[Amsterdam Mennonite Library (Bibliotheek en Archief van de Vereenigde Doopsgezinde Gemeente te Amsterdam)|Amsterdam Mennonite library]], but it has been impossible to determine this with certainty. Of his four works, Deutel himself published Eenige Psalmen Davids en geestelyke liederen (Hoorn, 1634) and Huwelykx Weegh-Schael, waerin werdt overghewogen of 't huwelyck goed of quaet is (Hoorn, 1641, reprinted 1662); the others, Avontuerlycke ende gedenkwaerdige Gheschiedenissen (Hoorn, 1666) and Een cort tractaetje tegen de toovery (Hoorn, 1670), were published after his death. In addition he prepared in 1644 an edition of the Klein Hoornsch Liedboek, to which he added an appendix of four songs of his own composition, signed with his motto, "Voor al selfs."
