Johannes Bauhin (Jean Bouhin, also written Boyn), born 24 August 1511 at Amiens in France, died 23 January 1582 at Basel, a physician by profession, was, while in Paris, converted from Catholicism to the Evangelical faith by reading the works of Erasmus. In 1540 or 1541 he met David Joris in Antwerp. It is not clear if he was already at this time a follower of David. About 1541 Bauhin moved to Basel, where he was a member of the secret David Joris congregation, since this leader and some of his followers had taken residence in Basel (1544). In 1553 or somewhat later trouble arose between David Joris and Bauhin, and the latter probably was banned from the congregation. Bauhin was on friendly terms with Castellion, who lived in Basel at the same time.
