Margriet, the wife of Jan Inghels of Bruges, Belgium, was (re) baptized there in 1537. In the next year she was arrested and persuaded by the inquisitor to recant. Notwithstanding the fact that she penitently returned to the Catholic Church she was sentenced on 17 August 1538 to be buried alive. Margriet was the first victim of Anabaptist persecution at Bruges.
