Kalleken Strings (Strincx, Stryngs), an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake at Ieper (Ypres) in Belgium on 18 October 1561. She was arrested with some other members of the Ieper congregation. Kalleken is celebrated in the song, "Als men schreef duyst vijfhondert eenentsestich Jaer" (No. 21 of the Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren). This song informs us about her strong faith, but does not give any particulars about her. Somewhat more instructive is another song, "Geroert ben ick van binnen" (I am moved in my heart), No. 23 of the Lietboecxken, which is also found in the Nieu Liedenboeck of 1562. On the basis of this hymn the Dutch martyr book of 1615 gives an account of this martyr, which is repeated in the following martyr books, including van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror, which states that Kalleken was a young and well-educated woman, who, notwithstanding a number of attempts to make her renounce her faith, remained steadfast. She was executed secretly because the officials feared a revolt of the populace. This execution took place some time after the death of her fellow members of Ieper.
