Jan ten Doornkaat Koolman was born 1 October 1815 at Norden, East Friesland, Germany. He was part owner of the Doomkaat distillery, which his father, who came from Holland in 1806, founded in Norden. Anna Brons was the only child of his father's first marriage. Jan was the oldest son of the second marriage, to Jeikelina Kool. He and his brother Fiepko made a thriving business of the distillery. For his native city and his country Jan ten Doornkaat Koolman performed meritorious services. In 1848 he was elected president of the civic assembly; this was the beginning of a long and honorable career of political service in both elective and appointive positions in local and national government.

In addition to all this professional and political activity, he also found time and energy to follow his scholarly inclinations. Though he had no formal academic training, his work in several areas won the recognition of scholars. Evidence of his versatile interests is found in his book, Die Unendlichkeit der Welt, Eine Naturbetrachtung (Norden, 1866, 2d ed.). An imperishable gift to his home country is his three-volume dictionary of the Frisian language, 1862-1865. In the Norden Mennonite Church he held the office of elder for many years.
