Tanneken van Mechelen (van den Broucke), the wife of the martyr Hans van der Straeten, was arrested with her husband at Antwerp, Belgium, in 1571, when she was only 17 years of age, and recanted. As a punishment she was confined in a Catholic convent at Breda, Netherlands, but escaped to Danzig. Here she made contact with the Mennonite congregation and after repentance was accepted into the church.
