Josyne Schricx, an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake on 20 August 1538 at Brugge, Belgium. Josyne, who was born at Brussels, was the widow of Jacob van der Mose. She had been baptized upon her faith in 1534. Her children had not been baptized. When Josyne was arrested, one of her children had died; the other, four years of age, was immediately baptized by order of the magistrates. Josyne was given a good testimony of Christian living by the Anabaptists of Ghent; obviously she had lived there before she moved to Brugge. She was the first Anabaptist woman to suffer in Brugge. She was burned alive without the usual mitigation of being previously strangled, a method of execution seldom applied to women.
