Versailles, Missouri, the county seat (population in 1959, 1,781; 2,565 in 2000; coordinates: 38° 25′ 52.51″ N, 92° 50′ 39.97″ W) of Morgan County, in the central part of the state. In the late 1950s Versailles was the shopping center for about 200 Mennonites living mostly in the farming area north east of the town. There were two Mennonite churches near Versailles: the Mt. Zion Mennonite Church (Mennonite Church) 6 miles northeast, and the Bethel Mennonite Church (General Conference Mennonite) 10 miles northeast of Versailles. The first Mennonite settlers located near Versailles in 1868. It was the home of Daniel Kauffman until he moved to Scottdale, Pennsylvania, to become editor of the Gospel Herald. Very few Mennonites live in the town.
