Willem van Leuven (Leuvene), an Anabaptist martyr, burned at the stake on 17 February 1553, at the Vrijdagsmarkt at Ghent, Belgium. (Van Braght gives the date as 1554.) Willem, who was a shoemaker or a cobbler, was an outstanding member in the Mennonite congregation of Ghent. His wife, Levina Ghyselins, suffered martyrdom at Ghent, 14 February 1554. Their son Frans van Leuvene was executed at Ghent in 1573. Willem van Leuven was the grandfather of Jan Doom, who in the early 17th century was a preacher of the Flemish Mennonite congregation at Haarlem, Holland.
