Dieric (Dirk, Diederik) Sonoy (Snoey) (1529-1597), a stadholder (governor) of [[North Holland (Netherlands)|North Holland]] in the name of [[William I, Prince of Orange (1533-1584)|William of Orange]], protected the Dutch Mennonites against the intolerance of the Reformed, who had asked in 1576 that the Mennonite meetings be prohibited.
