Zwaardemaker (Swaerdemaker), a Dutch Mennonite family, originally living at Zaandam, where many of its members have served as deacons in the Zaandam-Oost congregation. In the second half of the 17th century Claes Jansz Swaerdemaker was an elder of the Zaandam-Oost Waterlander congregation. He was a well-to-do businessman and an influential leader in the church, who was often called to serve in other congregations. In 1674 he intervened in the Wormerveer Waterlander congregation, when dissensions had arisen there. Dirk Zwaardemaker (1791-1838) and his brother Hendrick (d. 1841) were trustees of the Algemeene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit, as was Dirk H. Zwaardemaker (d. 1896); all three were manufacturers, at Zaandam. K. Zwaardemaker, a lawyer at Bussum, was a trustee of the Algemeene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit 1908- d. 1914. Some Zwaardemakers were deacons at Haarlem and Amsterdam.
