Verkindert (Ver Kindert, van der Kinderen), a former Dutch Mennonite family. Joost Verkindert died as an Anabaptist martyr in 1570 at Antwerp, Belgium. Verkinderts, who may have been Joost's relatives or descendants, shortly after emigrated from Kortrijk, Flanders, to the Netherlands; some were at Haarlem from ca. 1580. Pieter Ver Kindert, born at Franeker in Friesland, was a cloth merchant at Haarlem and ca. 1620-after 1649 a preacher of the Haarlem Flemish den Blok congregation. In 1649 he was secretary of the Flemish conference held at Haarlem. He published Een korte en seer grondighe historische Vertellinge be-langhende den Twist tot Franicker Anno 1587 . . . (Haarlem, 1628). This writing, an account of the quarrels that in 1586-87 led to the schism among the Flemish Mennonites (Huiskopers-Contrahuiskopers), also contains valuable information about the Flemish-Frisian dissensions of 1566-67. His Brief, dienende om te bewijsen . . . (Amsterdam, 1634) deals with the same controversies. Verkindert also replied to Petrus Bontemps, who had attacked the Mennonites, in Korte Ontschuldinge over d' onbehoorlifcke ende al te sware beschuldinge van Petro Bontemps (Haarlem, 1643). In addition he published Korte Verklaeringhe and NaerderVerhlaeringhe (both Haarlem, 1634), in which he expounded a number of Scripture texts. Besides these publications, the following are mentioned by Schagen: Korte verklaringe van de Christelyke Gemeynte ende 't Volck. Godts des Nieuwen Testaments (Haarlem, 1628), Over de Gemeynte Gods . . ., found in the Huysboeck of Jan de Buyser , and Handelinge der Vereenigde Vlaemse en duytse Doopsgezinde Gemeynten . . . (Vlissingen, 1666).
