The first Mennonite settlers located near Versailles in 1868. Versailles, Missouri, the county seat (population in 1959, 1,781; 2,565 in 2000; coordinates: 38° 25′ 52.51″ N, 92° 50′ 39.97″ W) of Morgan County, in the central part of the state. In the late 1950s Versailles was the shopping center for about 200 Mennonites living mostly in the farming area north­ east of the town. There were two Mennonite churches near Versailles: the Mt. Zion Mennonite Church (Mennonite Church) 6 miles northeast, and the Bethel Mennonite Church (General Conference Mennonite) 10 miles northeast of Versailles.
