Johann Schmidt: elder and minister; born 19 June 1865 in Wonsosz, Prussia, the second of six children of Andreas Schmidt (10 April 1834 – August 1918) and Anna (Ewert) Schmidt (d. 13 April 1913), (Andreas had three children from his first marriage to Eva (Ratzlaff) Bartel [1825-1862] ). Johann married Helena Schroeder (10 October 1862, Olszyn, Prussia – 23 October 1897, Deutsch-Wymysle, Prussia) on 12 May 1891 in Deutsch-Wymysle, daughter of Jakob Schroeder (20 August 1840 – 20 July 1910) and Wilhelmine (Ratzlaff) Schroeder (28 August 1839 – 24 January 1926). Johann and Helena had five children: Wilhelmine, Anna, Emilie, Julianna, and Helena. Johann married for the second time on 25 June 1898 to Emilie Ratzlaff (20 March 1871, Deutsch-Zyck, Prussia – 24 June 1929, Deutsch-Wymysle, Prussia), daughter of August Ratzlaff (12 April 1838 – 19 April 1927) and Helena (Ratzlaff) Ratzlaff (17 August 1837 – 9 May 1884). Johann and Emilie had seven children: Mathilda, Emil, Wilhelm, Martha, Peter, Hulda, and Anna. Johann’s third wife was Julianna (Schmidt) Bartel (24 October 1871, Arciechowsk, Poland – 1939). She was killed in a bomb blast during World War II. Johann died 26 February 1936 in Deutsch-Kazun, Prussia.
Johann was ordained as a minister in 1894 and elder in 1896 in the Deutsch-Wymysle Mennonite Church near Warsaw, Poland, when his predecessor Johann Kliewer joined the local Mennonite Brethren congregation. In 1907 Johann also joined the Mennonite Brethren leaving the Deutsch-Wymysle congregation without an elder. The observance of baptism and Lord's Supper in the remaining small congregation was supervised by the elder of the Deutsch-Kazun Mennonite Church. Johann Schmidt moved to Deutsch-Kazun in 1930, where he died. (see also Deutsch-Wymysle.)
