Andries Scheltes Cuperus (Cuperius), originally of Blessum, Friesland, born about 1750, died 1812 at Zijldijk, Groningen, was a Dutch Mennonite pastor, serving the congregations of Terschelling, 1782-1790; Knijpe (Nieuw Brongerga), 1790-1804; and Zijldijk, 1804-1812. Through his influence the two congregations of Terschelling decided to unite (Doopsgezinde Bijdragen 1861, 89). During his pastorate at Knijpe he was interested in politics and since the dissenters, including the Mennonites, had obtained equal political rights with the members of the Reformed Church in 1796, Cuperus was for a few years a member of the Frisian provincial government, which was, however, not much appreciated by a large part of his congregation.
