The Canadian Mennonite Relief and Immigration Council was formed in October 1959 through the amalgamation of the Canadian Mennonite Board of Colonization and the Mennonite Central Relief Committee of Western Canada. The council was granted a government charter in 1960. The executive was composed of J. J. Thiessen, chair, C. A. DeFehr, vice-chair, and A. A. Wiens, secretary. In 1963 the council, along with a number of other Mennonite organizations, formed Mennonite Central Committee Canada.
