Tabor Academy began its operations with the opening of Tabor College, Hillsboro, Kansas, in 1908, and was operated under the Tabor College Corporation, which was granted its charter by the State on 19 March 1908. The curriculum provided a standard high-school education with a heavy emphasis on Bible. In its early years it also provided the normal training course for students preparing to teach.

During the early years of the Corporation, the academy dominated the program almost completely. The first-year enrollment of 78 steadily increased until it reached 176 in 1920. From 1916 to 1927 the average was 141. In 1926 the college enrollment surpassed the academy and from that time the academy declined until the college closed for reorganization in 1934-35. During this year the school became a conference institution of the General Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches.

When the college program was again started under conference operation, the academy continued its program but never regained its earlier enrollment. It was discontinued in 1945 when the conference voted to "leave the operation of the educational program on the secondary school level to local congregations and group organizations." There were several reasons for this decision. (1) Academies which developed in Kansas, Oklahoma, and California relieved the need for conference control of secondary education. (2) As more and more emphasis was placed on college work, it became difficult to operate two schools under one organization. (3) The increasing popularity of public schools kept many students from coming. (4) The cost of operating a dual program became too great.
