Cardinaal is a Dutch Mennonite family descending from Nen Jansz, who lived at Zaandam or Westzaan about 1500. Hendrick Hendricksz Cardinaal (1644-1702), shipbuilder and lumber dealer at Zaandam, was a friend of Tsar Peter of Russia, who lived for some time at Zaandam. His son Jacob Hendriksz Cardinaal (1682-1735), a wealthy shipbuilder and lumber merchant, owner of an oil-mill and whaling boats which hunted near Greenland, served the Zaandam Mennonite congregation of the Nieuwe Huys as deacon from 1726 until his death in 1735, as did his grandson Cornelis Cardinaal from 1778 until his death in 1804.

Only one member of this Cornelis Cardinaal went into the ministry. The two sons of this Cornelis Cardinaal, Cornelis (1833-1897) and Pieter (1834-1889), living at Almelo, started a linen business; about 1855 they founded a steam-powered weaving mill, in 1870 also a spinning mill (Almelosche Stoomspinnerij).
