Jacob de Swarte (Zwarte), an [[Anabaptism|Anabaptist]] martyr, was born at [[Nukerke (Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium)|Nukerke]] (Nijpkerke) in Flanders, a son of [[Jan de Swarte (d. 1563)|Jan de Swarte]]. Jacob de Swarte (Zwarte), an Anabaptist martyr, was born at Nukerke (Nijpkerke) in Flanders, a son of Jan de Swarte. He lived in Oostende and Hondschoote, in which town he was baptized upon his faith in 1557. In the spring of 1558 he moved to Bruges, and soon united with the Mennonite congregation. In vain he tried to win his Catholic wife and his son-in-law to the faith. During a meeting of the congregation a number of members were arrested including Jacob and his cousin Jan Vervest. He did not forsake his Lord and died loyally at the stake on 15 August 1558 at Bruges, Belgium.
