Johannes Bremer, a Dutch Mennonite preacher, the son of the Remonstrant preacher of the same name and Remberta Zittart, daughter of the Leiden Mennonite preacher Gijsbert Zittart, was born 8 April 1694 at Hoorn. He studied in Amsterdam and in 1715 became a ministerial candidate in the Remonstrant brotherhood. But he received no regular position, and since his views coincided with those of the Mennonites he accepted a call to the Mennonite congregation at Leiden, and preached his inaugural sermon there 2 June 1720. At that time he very probably was himself rebaptized. In 1728 he received simultaneous calls to Haarlem and to the Lamist congregation in Amsterdam. He accepted the latter and worked there until his death, 20 February 1757. His fellow preacher Joannes Deknatel, though in many respects opposed to his views, delivered a laudatory funeral sermon. In 1735 Bremer was one of the founders of the Amsterdam seminary for the education of ministers. He was married first to Catharina van der Hoeff and after her death in 1738 to Geertruyd van Eeghen.

The following books by Bremer have been published: Rijmgedachten over het wenschelijkste op aarde (Delft, 1718); Lijkrede op den Remonstrantschen leeraar Joannes de Goede (Amsterdam, 1738); Grondbeginsels van de leere der waerheid, die naer de godzaligheid is, bij wijze van vragen en antwoorden opgestelt voor de Doopsgezinden (Amsterdam, 1743 and frequently reprinted); Handleiding tot waerheid en Deugd, inzonderheid gericht tot onderwijs van kleine kinderen (Amsterdam, 1744); Kort begrip van godgeleerde verhandelingen (Amsterdam, 1747); Ninive met den ondergang gedreigt; maar om zyn bekeering en boetvaardigheid gespaard en behouden (Amsterdam, 1748); Het verloste Nederland opgewekt tot een betaemelijke lof- en dankbetuiging aen den allerhoogsten God voor den geschonken Vreede (Amsterdam, 1749, a sermon on Psalm 147: 12-14); Twee en dertig predikatien (Amsterdam, 1757).
