Jacques Mergaert, an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake at Antwerp, Belgium, with Hans Corneliszoon de Ruytere and Hans Bret on 4 January 1577. Jacques was born at Ghent and was sentenced to death for attending forbidden meetings of the Anabaptists, being rebaptized, and persevering in this "heresy."
