Van Gelder is a Dutch Mennonite family, whose ancestor was Dirk van Gelder (b. 1685 at [[Kampen (Overijssel, Netherlands)|Kampen]], Dutch province of [[Overijssel (Netherlands)|Overijssel]], and d. there 1762). He was a member of the Reformed Church, but his wife, Machteld Bruins, is supposed to have been a member of the Mennonite congregation.
