Johann Lorenz von Mosheim, a noted German Protestant theologian, professor of theology in Helmstadt and chancellor of the University of Göttingen. In his meritorious church history, Institutiones historiae ecclesiasticae recentiores (Helmstädt, 1741), he treats the Mennonites extensively and indeed much more moderately and correctly than other historiographers of that time. He admits that he read the book by Herman Schijn, Historia Christianorum, but does not agree that they should not be called Wiedertäufer. He accuses them of maliciously and cleverly concealing the issue, a charge which Gerardus Maatschoen vigorously and skillfully refutes. In his writings, Versuch einer unparteiischen Ketzergeschichte (Helmstädt, 1746) and Anderweitiger Versuch einer vollständigen und unparteiischen Ketzergeschichte (Helmstädt, 1748), he does not mention the Mennonites. The former book does not go beyond the Middle Ages (Waldenses); the latter deals mainly with Michel Servetus.
