Echo-Verlag (Echo Publishers) was founded in Winnipeg, MB on 3 July 1944, by former students of the Chortitza Zentralschule (opened in 1842) who emigrated from Russia to Canada after 1923, to commemorate the centenary of that school. The object of the organization was to collect and publish historical material dealing with the history of the Mennonites with special consideration of their settlements in Russia. Its publications appear with the subtitle "Historische Schriftenreihe," Echo-Verlag. The Verlag was a purely Mennonite, nonprofit undertaking, without denominational or other obligations. All work in connection with it was honorary. The Verlag owned no printing press and no other property. At its head was the president who was elected at the organization meeting. He was assisted by a council of five members, including the secretary, all appointed by him. The secretary was also the business manager, and in his hands rested the responsibility for all the work undertaken.

At its organization Dietrich H. Epp of Rosthern,SK, was president, and Arnold Dyck of Steinbach, MB, secretary, the latter serving as executive officer. The following books have been published, all in German: C. P. Toews, Die Tereker Ansiedlung (The Terek Settlement), 1945; David H. Epp, Johann Cornies, 1946, reprint of 1909 edition; A. Loewen and A. Friesen, Die Flucht über den Amur (Flight Across the Amur), 1946; G. Lohrenz, Sagradowka, 1947; F. Bartsch, Unser Auszug nach Mittelasien (Our Emigration to Central Asia; a new edition with a closing chapter by Alexander Rempel), 1948, reprint of 1907 edition; Am Trakt, 1948, a condensed translation from the Russian with a supplement by J. J. Dyck; H. Goerz, Die Molotschnaer Ansiedlung, 1950-51; David H. Epp, Heinrich Heese, and Nikolai Regehr, Johann Philipp Wiebe (one volume), with the further title: Zwei Vordermanner des suedrusslaendischen Mennonitentums, 1952; Die Kubaner Ansiedlung, 1953; H. Goerz, Memrik, 1954; H. Sawatzky, Templer mennonitischer Herkunft, 1955; P. Wiens and P. Klassen, Jubiläumsschrift zum 25-jährigen Bestehen der Kolonie Fernheim, Chaco-Paraguay, 1956; H. Goerz, Die mennonitischen Siedlungen der Krim, 1957; and V. Peters, ed., Zwei Dokumente, 1965.

The Manitoba Mennonite Historical Society and CMBC Publications agreed in 1987 to publish this series in English translation.
