The parents of Dirk were Dirk Johann Warkentin (10 November 1788 – 10 April 1837) and Susanna (Friesen) Warkentin (10 December 1785, Tiegenhagen, Gross Werder, Prussia – 20 December 1819, South Russia). After Susanna’s death, Dirk’s father married for the second time to Anganetha Wiens (12 September 1797, Zieskendorf, [[Dirschau (Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland)|Dirschau]], Prussia – 28 January 1860) and they had seven children.

Dirk was married to Maria Schwarz (1817-1881) and they had eight children (see additional information for further information regarding Dirk's family). Dirk died 11 December 1869.
