Johann Schartner (1827-1912), a Russian Mennonite elder, was born at Karolswalde, Volhynia, Polish Russia, on 22 August 1827, a son of Friedrich Schartner and Anna (Eck) Schartner. Johann was first married to Maria Becker (b. ca. 1832), daughter of Peter Becker and Helena (Unruh) Becker. Johann and Maria had twelve children. After Maria’s death Johann married for the second time to Elisabeth Schmidt (b. 22 March 1860, Waldheim, Molotschna Colony, South Russia). Johann and Elisabeth had eleven children. Johann died at Landskrone, Molotschna Colony on 12 August 1912.
Johann was ordained to the ministry at Karolswalde in 1852. Before or at the time of the great migration of the Polish Mennonites to America Schartner went to the Molotschna settlement in Russia, where after the exodus of the Alexanderwohl congregation he was elected elder of the newly organized church in 1877. As elder he frequently visited the Mennonites of Poland, particularly those who had been left without a minister. His contribution lay in his knowledge of the Bible, Christian sincerity, and a brotherly and tolerant attitude in matters of congregational life.
