Rudolf Bartel, b. 18 April 1875, at [[Deutsch-Kazun (Poland)|Deutsch-Kazun]], near Warsaw, [[Poland|Poland]], was married to Eleonore Bartel in 1904. He was chosen minister of the [[Deutsch-Kazun (Poland)|Deutsch-Kazun Mennonite Church]] in 1911, and ordained elder the following year. The burdens of the elder during the trying years of [[World War (1914-1918)|World War I]] and after were heavy. During World War II all male members of the congregation from 17 to 60 years of age were sent by the Poles to the Bereza-Katuska prison. Elder Rudolf Bartel was seized by Polish soldiers on 7 September 1939 and shot. Most of the family were killed by a German bombing attack early in the war.
