Govert (Godevaert Mertens), an [[Anabaptism|Anabaptist]] martyr, born at St. Peters near [[Maastricht (Limburg, Netherlands)|Maastricht]], Dutch province of [[Limburg (Netherlands)|Limburg]], living at [[Lier (Antwerp, Belgium)|Lier]] in [[Brabant (Belgium/Netherlands)|Brabant]], [[Belgium|Belgium]], was burned at the stake on 31 January 1551 at Lier with [[Gielis van Aerde (d. 1551)|Gillis]], [[Anneken van Roosbroecke (d. 1551)|Anneken]], and [[Marie Vlamincx (ca. 1475-1551)|Mariken]]. He testified to his faith with great joy, and strengthened his fellow sufferers, while earnestly warning and admonishing his judges and the spectators.
