Friedrich Otto zur Linden was a Protestant pastor at Neuwied, Germany, and church historian. His biography of Melchior Hoffman, Melchior Hofmann, ein Prophet der Wiedertäufer (Haarlem, 1885), 477 pp., inspired by Friedrich Nippold, which was accepted in 1882 as a prize-winning treatise by Teylers Godgeleerd Genootschap, is of great importance for the history of Anabaptism. This work—to use zur Linden's own words—"is in that class of presentations which show Anabaptism in an essentially more favorable light than has been customary on the part of traditional historiography. It strives to do justice to Anabaptism without at the same time overrating this important movement at the expense of the Reformation" (op. cit., p. XVI). Zur Linden considers Mysticism the determining feature of Anabaptism in general and of Melchior Hoffman in particular. It is not quite clear whether he means to indicate that this is a difference in principle from the reformers. This treatise is a veritable mine of historical and statistical material for the study of Anabaptist history.
