Jacob Hendrik Floh was a Dutch Mennonite preacher and author, born 1758 at [[Krefeld (Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany)|Krefeld]], [[Germany|Germany]], the son of Johannes Floh and Arnoida Albertine Mauritz. He is probably the Hendrik Floh who was baptized at [[Kleve (Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany)|Kleve]] in 1776. He studied at the [[Amsterdam Mennonite Theological Seminary (Kweekschool)|Mennonite Seminary in Amsterdam]] 1777-1783, was called as preacher to [[Nijmegen (Gelderland, Netherlands)|Nijmegen]] in 1783, but moved to [[Enschede (Overijssel, Netherlands)|Enschede]] in the same year, and remained there until 1829, with the exception of a few years devoted to politics. He died in Enschede on 25 March 1830. He was an ardent [[Patriots and Mennonites in the Netherlands|Patriot]] and took an enthusiastic part in the events leading up to the revolution of 1795. In 1796 he was elected to the States-General of Holland, and was for a time secretary of the first chamber of the body representing the "Batavian Republic." He was a member of the committee of popular representatives that planned the separation of church and state. Then he returned to the pulpit. In 1800 he was also made school inspector of the province of [[Overijssel (Netherlands)|Overijssel]], and later secretary of the provincial board of education.
