Thijs Hendriksz (Tijs Hermansz), an Anabaptist martyr, executed at Leeuwarden in Friesland, Netherlands, on 2 May 1553. Thijs, who was paralyzed, was put to death with a young woman, Berendge, by drowning. They were bound into a sack and thrown from a boat into the town moat. After the sentence was pronounced Thijs protested against the plan of a secret execution and said, "Cats and dogs are thus drowned." They wanted to be executed publicly at the official place of execution, desiring to give a testimony of faith before the bystanders.
There is a song commemorating the firmness of faith of these two martyrs: "Een nieuwe liet heb ic gedicht, van twee schaep wtgekoren." This hymn, found in the hymnal Veelderhande Liedekens, is included by Wackernagel.
