Adriaen Brael, an Anabaptist martyr of Winde, Belgium, was captured in 1561 at a meeting in Bruges, Flanders, with fifteen others. At their arrest, when the police demanded the surrender of their books and arms, they replied that they were nonresistant. En route to the prison, three escaped; the others endured captivity willingly and cheerfully, rejoicing in their approaching martyrdom. Twice they were hailed before the authorities and openly confessed their faith. They were therefore condemned to die and were burned at the stake. Adriaen died on 10 December 1561; on the same day Marin Eeuwout (Marijntgen Aelmeers), Andries Viblarre (Andries de Molenaar), Nicasius Aelmaere (Nikasen Amare), and Lucas Heindricx were also executed. The rest were put to death on the next day. A number of these martyrs are found in the song, "Genade en Vrede moet godvresende zijn" (Mercy and peace must be God-fearing), from the old Dutch hymn book, Veelderhande Liedekens (1569); also included in Wackernagel, Lieder, 130.
