Govert (Godevaert Mertens), an Anabaptist martyr, born at St. Peters near Maastricht, Dutch province of Limburg, living at Lier in Brabant, Belgium, was burned at the stake on 31 January 1551 at Lier with Gillis, Anneken, and Mariken. He testified to his faith with great joy, and strengthened his fellow sufferers, while earnestly warning and admonishing his judges and the spectators. On their death Hans von Overdam wrote the hymn, "Alsmen schreef duyst vijfhondert En daer toe noch vijftich Jaer," which is found in the Liedtboecxken van den Offer des Heeren, No. 17, reprinted in Wackernagel.
