Conradus Heresbachius (Conrat Hertzbach) (1496-1576) was a humanist and counselor in the service of the Duke of Cleves, Germany. He was a friend of Erasmus, to whom he owed all his public positions, the last being that of tutor at the court of Cleves. In this position he was able to accompany the expedition against the Münsterite Anabaptists (as a spectator). He wrote his account of it in two confidential letters to Erasmus (November 1534 and 28 July 1535). The book Conradi Heresbachii I. C. Historia Anabaptistica de factione Monasteriensi anno 1534 et seqq . . . epistola formae anno 1536 descripta nunc demum . . . edita . . . Amsterdami 1637 is the work of a compiler, and contains much historical source material based on these letters, which is not found elsewhere. A copy is in the Mennonite Historical Library (Goshen).
