An Amish Mennonite family, Mast first settled in Berks-Lancaster counties, Pennsylvania, during the colonial period by immigration from either Switzerland or the Palatinate, Germany. By the first quarter of the 19th century six family lines were established. Three of these lines are still quite numerous in Mennonite circles throughout the United States and Canada.
