Viglius (Wigle) van Aytta of Zwichem (1507-1577), a learned nobleman of Friesland, Netherlands, a friend of Erasmus, a Roman Catholic clergyman, ecclesiastical inspector for the bishop of Utrecht in the Dutch province of Groningen 1534-35, member of the (Spanish) Secret Court of Brussels, several times ambassador of Emperor Charles V, was a bitter opponent of heresy and especially of the Anabaptists. His letters contain some particulars about the Anabaptists after 1534. A painted portrait which until the early 20th century was supposed to be a picture of Menno Simons (Doopsgezinde Bijdragen 1916, facing p. 33) probably represents Viglius van Aytta.
