Hawaii, the 50th state of the [[United States of America|United States]], consists of a group of eight major islands in the central Pacific ocean with an estimated population of 1,288,198 in 2008 and an area of 10,931 square miles (28,311 km²). Hawaii, the 50th state of the United States, consists of a group of eight major islands in the central Pacific ocean with an estimated population of 1,288,198 in 2008 and an area of 10,931 square miles (28,311 km²). A Mennonite congregation began to emerge in Honolulu in 1986 under the leadership of Van Pham, a former Mennonite pastor in Vietnam, and his wife, Qui Thi Vu. The effort was supported by the Mennonite Board of Missions (Mennonite Church) and the Lancaster and Franconia Conferences; the emerging congregation was linked to the Southwest Mennonite Conference.
In 2000 there were two Mennonite Church USA congregations with a total membership of 96.
