Laurens Verniers, a Mennonite elder, at first active in Antwerp, Belgium. In 1567 he was banished from Antwerp by the Duke of Alba, but he had already escaped to Franeker in Friesland about two years previously. Concerning his work there is not much information. A letter by Elder Hans Busschaert to Verniers, published by Vos, says that both Busschaert and Verniers sided with the Flemish during the Flemish-Frisian dissensions. This letter, undated, was probably written shortly after the spring of 1567. In 1570 an elder Laurens of Franeker visited Kleve, Germany, with Hendrik van Roosevelt to settle a quarrel in the Mennonite congregation of this town. After their visit in Cleve they traveled to Cologne to defend themselves against the charge of unorthodoxy made against them by Ameldonck, who then was an elder of Cologne. This Elder Laurens was apparently Verniers.
