Dirck de Schilder, an Anabaptist martyr, was executed on 8 October 1558, at Antwerp, Belgium. It is not known how he was put to death, whether by beheading or burning at the stake. He was probably beheaded, for in the song of the Liedtboecxken van den Offer des Heeren, beginning "Aenhoort Godt, hemelsche Vader" (Hear, O God, heavenly Father), it is said that he had to kneel before the executioner. His official name was Dirck Effeleer (Effeleers);he was a native of Mechelen, Belgium, and a painter by trade.
