Willem de Clerck (d. 1569)
Willem de Cle(e)rck (Guilliame van Poperinghe, also called Jan, and in the Martyrs' Mirror Willem van Poperinge), an Anabaptist martyr, executed on 30 March 1569, at Antwerp, Belgium. Before the judges he declared that he was born at Meenen in Flanders and lived at Dambrugge. He had been married to Maeyken Christiaens "before the congregation" eight years previously at Nijpkerke (Nieppe); they had four children, who had not been baptized into the Catholic Church, "because baptism is the prerogative of adults." He himself had been (re)baptized in 1557 at Meenen by Joachim Vermeeren. Willem was arrested during a meeting of the Antwerp congregation in the house of Jan Poote. His wife suffered martyrdom on 4 April 1569.
