W. H. Toe Water Doopsgezind Jaarboekje
Willem Hendrik Toe Water b. 22 May 1885, at Diemen, d. 12 December 1938, at Zwolle, a Dutch Mennonite pastor, who after finishing his theological studies at the University of Amsterdam
and Mennonite seminary
at Amsterdam, served the congregations of Warns
1912-1916, St-Anna-Parochie 1916-1923, and Zwolle
1923-1938. He was especially active in the Vereeniging voor Gemeentedagen (now Gemeenschap voor Doopsgezind Broederschapswerk
), and in 1929-1936 served as editor of its periodical Brieven
. Toe Water was one of the first Dutch Mennonite ministers who thought it necessary to organize the youth in a special Youth Association (see Doopsgezinde Jongerenbond
). For many years he was a trustee of the Elspeet Brotherhood Home. Toe Water was a pious, poetic, somewhat sensitive spirit; he was a gifted musician, composer of the melody of the Elspeet hymn, a master storyteller. He published a few sermons and a volume of poems, Kleine Geschenken
. S. H. N. Gorter
, a close friend of Toe Water from 1902, preached his funeral sermon at Zwolle 15 December 1938.
